Taegukgi (the title refers to the Korean name for the South Korean national flag): The Brotherhood of War (Korean: 태극기 휘날리며; Taegukgi Hwinallimyo) is a 2004 South Korean war movie. This gut-wrenching action movie is about the fate of two brothers who are drafted in the South Korean army by force after the north communist start to invade further south. This movie clearly portrays the upside down of the ordinary people’s live due to the horrors of war in the early 50’s. It gained international success and won various awards for its dramatic tale.
This movie presents a story of an elder brother who can do anything, even sacrifice his own life for his younger brother.
Jin-tae (Jang Dong-gun), is a shoe shiner and his 18-year-old student brother, Jin-seok Lee (Won Bin), form a poor and struggling life but happy family with their mother, Jin-tae’s fiance Young-shin (Eun-ju Lee), and her young sisters. Jin-tae and his mother are hard workers, who sacrifice themselves to send Jin-seok to the university, who is his family’s hope for the future. Chaos erupts across the nation, when North Korea invades South Korea. Jin-Seok and Jin-tae are forced to join army. Jin-tae as an older brother only focuses on safe return of his younger brother Jin-Seok at any cost, even if it costs his life. For that he deals with the military officers that if he shows impressive records on the battlefield, his brother can get the early release. Soon, Jin-tae proves to be a fearless soldier, and recognized as a war hero, but as the conflict wears on, he develops an unhealthy passion for the violence of the battlefield and Jin-seok finds himself questioning his big brother’s actions, both as a soldier and as a member of his family.
